Incense and Charcoal

The use of incense in Catholic liturgy has a long tradition and deep symbolic meaning. Its presence accompanies particular moments in religious celebrations and expresses reverence, prayer and solemnity. The rising smoke recalls the prayers of the faithful ascending towards God, as expressed in Psalm 141:2: «Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense».

During the celebration of the Eucharist, incense may be used to cense the altar, the offerings, the Gospel and other objects or people, in accordance with liturgical practice. It is also used during Eucharistic adoration, certain solemn celebrations and religious processions. Censing is therefore a gesture of honour and reverence towards that which is presented or venerated.

Liturgical incense is available in different varieties, each with its own fragrance and characteristics. The choice depends on the preferences of each church or community and the type of celebration in which it will be used. Both the fragrance and the intensity and duration of the burn may be worth considering.

Using incense in a censer also requires liturgical charcoal, which provides the heat needed to burn the incense grains and release their fragrance. Charcoal is available in different formats and sizes, so it is important to choose the right type for the censer and the intended duration of use.
